Kerry, Bush resume campaign with focus on economy - UPDATE 1
2004-06-15 22:09
WASHINGTON (AFX) -- And now back to the presidential campaign. After a
weeklong respite in deference to memorial proceedings for former President
Ronald Reagan, Sen. John Kerry and President Bush were ready Monday to resume
their fight for the presidency. Kerry began a two-week campaign swing that
aides said would be focused almost exclusively on the economy. The campaign
released a policy memo arguing that recent strength in the jobs market belies
a struggle by millions of middle-class families to make ends meet amid rising
prices, stagnant income and increasing debt. The Bush campaign, which has
been running television ads accusing Kerry of undue pessimism, issued its own
memo highlighting upbeat economic data, including faster jobs creation and
accelerating economic growth. "The U.S. economy is firing on all cylinders.
Under President Bush's leadership we have created 1.4 million jobs since
August and the economy is growing at its fastest rate in 20 years," the Bush
memo read, echoing a TV ad, entitled "Pessimism," that it has been running
since early this month. Kerry is slated Tuesday to begin a campaign swing
that will take him to New Jersey, Ohio and Detroit this week to discuss
elements of his economic plan. The Kerry campaign contends that despite
recent strength in the labor market, the Bush administration remains
vulnerable on the economy. The campaign memo highlighted data showing that a
record 1.625 million American households fell into bankruptcy in 2003 -- a
statistic that demonstrates that an increasing number of Americans are still
feeling economic pain that Bush's tax-cutting agenda has done little to
alleviate, said Gene Sperling, an adviser to the Kerry campaign who served as
head of the White House's National Economic Council under President Bill
Clinton.
